It may be difficult to imagine, but families are living in substandard housing—right in your community. They live in houses that are overcrowded, unhealthy, even dangerous. People living in these conditions struggle to achieve even the most foundational needs: food, water, safety and rest. When survival needs go unmet, families cannot turn their attention to higher needs such as education, emotional health, career and healthy relationships. Living in substandard conditions yields a constant mix of despair, stress and a preoccupation with "getting by."

How you can help
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity have joined together in an unprecedented alliance that will put the faith of Lutherans and their communities into action to help families in need move into the economic mainstream and put an end to poverty housing.
Thrivent Builds Homes volunteers work in local communities to help build simple, decent, affordable homes. All building supplies are provided on site. And no previous construction experience is needed. The Habitat partner families themselves put in hundreds of hours of their own labor, building their own home, as well as other Habitat homes. The homes are then sold to partner families at no profit and financed with no-profit mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build more homes.
More than two-thirds of the funding for each home will be contributed by Thrivent Financial, its members and local chapters. The remaining funding will be raised through the ongoing efforts of local Lutheran congregations and Habitat affiliates.
