Thrivent Builds Homes off and running in the media

Jan. 30 found many of you contacting local media to share the good news that an additional 312 families will partner with Habitat for Humanity because of the Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity alliance. The Marketing and Communications Team of the Alliance Strategy Office would like to extend a great big THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the national announcement.

Nationally, the Salem Radio Network broadcast a story featuring Mark Andrews, executive director of Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, to its more than 1,500 affiliated Christian and general format radio stations. But local media was where the majority of the pick-up occurred. TV, radio, daily newspapers and community newspapers from across the country picked up the story. One of the bigger wins was with the Washington, D.C., NBC affiliate NBC 4, where the story was featured on the 6 p.m. Jan. 30 news and the morning show on Jan. 31. Washington, D.C., is the eighth largest television market in the country. An estimated 211,937 people saw the Monday story, and another 145,106 viewed the morning news. The largest daily newspaper to cover the story was the Washington Post. At No. 5, its circulation is more than 678,779. Other large dailies that covered the story included the Minneapolis Star Tribune, No. 14, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, No. 21.

Thanks to all the regional efforts through your news releases and media calls, we were able to reach many people through local TV, radio and newspapers news outlets. You will see from the list below just how many of you were able to get coverage at the community level—and the media hits continue to trickle in! As more builds begin across the country and we have more “visuals” in the form of a special events and partner families, we hope to secure more national and regional coverage.

Again, thanks for all your tremendous efforts in helping us get the word out about this fantastic program. This year, 312 families will build and purchase decent, affordable homes—that means there are 312 stories that everyone needs to hear about!

Best Practices

Contacting Lutheran media
Even though our national announcement was successful, our public relations efforts need to continue. As you prepare to break ground, raise walls and arrange for dedications, don’t forget to include a media plan in your overall event planning. And remember to include any and all local Lutheran publications as part of that plan. These publications are read by our primary target audience—Lutherans—so make sure you research their contact information and include them in your list of media contacts. Thrivent Financial also maintains a list of Lutheran media. If you’d like information about the Lutheran media in your area, contact Tara Perre at tara.perre@thrivent.com.

Tracking media outreach
The Media Log Sheet (Word, 36K) in the Thrivent Builds Homes Awareness Toolbox can help you remember your media outreach efforts and successes. And, as articles are published or radio/TV stations report your stories, please let us know! We are not always able to obtain information about media hits at the community level. It will be very helpful if you fax or e-mail a copy of any printed articles—just be sure that you include the name of the source and the date of publication. We would also like to know dates and sources for TV and radio hits. These can be sent to cheryl.winget@thrivent.com or faxed to 612-340-4070, ATTN: Cheryl Winget. Making this part of your PR plan will ensure that we are advised of your media successes on a regular basis.

Questions and Answers

Q: Can youth work on the construction site?
A: The Thrivent Builds Homes program does not have program requirements regarding youth on the construction site. Both the Congregational Champion (pages 34 and 44) and Chapter Specialist (page 55) program guides address youth and the construction site. In both cases, it states that affiliates should be consulted regarding their specific guidelines for involving youth on the construction site. There are multiple ways to involve youth, both on and off the construction site. These guides also say that Habitat has a general rule that volunteers be at least 18 years old. Actually, Habitat for Humanity International recommends that volunteers be at least 16 years old to work on the construction site. However, in all cases affiliates should be consulted for specifics on their local policy for youth involvement, as this may vary due to individual affiliate policies and state law.

Q: One of my affiliates needs another build agreement. Can I have them use the one on Thrivent Builds Homes Resources website?
A: No. The build agreement on the Thrivent Builds Homes Resources website is only a sample and should not be used. Affiliates needing another build agreement should be referred to Bill Brown (800-422-4828 ext 2295, jbrown@habitat.org). The build agreement he will send includes customized information for the affiliate.

Q: Once an affiliate’s documentation has been collected by Bill Brown at Habitat for Humanity International for Milestone 1, how quickly will the affiliate receive their first draw of funds?
A: Once Bill has received all of the documentation outlined in the Affiliate Program Guide on page 22, step 2e and has ensured it is okay (including the Project Status Report signed by the LCSS-TB and ODC), he will issue a check request to Accounts Payable. From there, the check should be issued to the affiliate within one week. If affiliates prefer to do an ACH electronic transfer, they should send Bill a copy of a voided check (both front and back) and request to receive their funds via ACH transfer. He can then set the affiliate up for ACH transfers.

Q: How will ODCs be kept informed of affiliates that have or have not met milestones and if their check requests have been made for drawing funds?
A: All ODCs are now receiving weekly reports from Bill Brown. These reports are e-mailed each Monday to all ODCs. ODCs should review the report for their affiliates and inform the Thrivent Builds Homes Project Team of any significant issues. Here are some key things to focus on for follow up:

  • Dates in the columns indicate that Bill has received the documentation for the item header and that the documentation is acceptable per the program guidelines.
  • A blank indicates that Bill has received nothing.
  • A ? indicates that Bill received documentation, but it is not acceptable. ODCs should follow up with the affiliate when they see a question mark to ensure the affiliate is collecting the appropriate documentation.
  • The date in the “ck date” column is the date the check request went to Accounts Payable.
Q: Project Status Report: What’s the best way to get this to Bill Brown to authorize a draw-down of funds?
A: Originally, it was envisioned that affiliates would print their page from the PSR Excel workbook and mail it to Bill Brown with any other documentation required. That page must have the signatures/initials of the LCSS-TB and ODC. This is still an acceptable way for the PSR to get to Bill Brown. However, if it is easier, LCSS-TBs and ODCs can e-mail the entire PSR to Bill Brown electronically (jbrown@habitat.org). Before Bill will release funds, he will ensure the affiliate’s other documentation has been received and is in good order.

Q: What happens if an affiliate misses Milestone 1 and has not received an extension?
A: The Thrivent Builds Homes team in the ASO will review the cases where an affiliate has failed to meet Milestone 1 and an extension has not been granted. Milestone 1 includes the clear title documentation and all other documentation outlined in step 2e, page 22 of the affiliate program guide. When we look at that list of affiliates, we may decide to reallocate those funds. This is a process that will occur after Feb. 15 and one for which we are still working on the process to ensure we get all the necessary data to make those decisions. It is not our desire to reallocate, but we need affiliates that are committed to meeting the program requirements. This is the only milestone around which we will consider reallocation; however, there may be implications for 2007 funding for affiliates that miss other milestones.

Q: How can I learn more about Habitat for Humanity and the affiliates?
A: Habitat for Humanity University was established to educate people about Habitat and housing issues. There are several e-courses available online and free of charge. To learn more about Habitat’s mission, vision, and organizational structure, take the “Foundations of Habitat for Humanity” e-courses available at www.hfhu.org. The courses range in length but usually last 30-90 minutes.

Q: The online build schedule template seems to conflict with the Affiliate Program Guide, particularly the items in red being required when they are not required in the program guide. Can this be corrected?
A: Good catch. The online build schedule template has been updated to eliminate the conflicts.

Q: How can I obtain a Thrivent Builds logo to put on my chapter/RFO/affiliate Web site?
A: To obtain the logo, send an e-mail to logoreq@thrivent.com requesting the Thrivent Builds logo including the e-mail address of who should receive this logo. Also indicate whether the logo file should be sent in one-color black, reversed white or full color and whether the logo file should be sent in .jpeg or .eps format.

Q: The Thrivent Builds Homes outdoor sign has a place to put the partner family name. What if my partner family doesn’t want its name publicized for privacy reasons?
A: If the partner family does not wish their name to be released, you can either leave that space on the sign blank or fill it with the home address.

Q: Can other signs be placed on the build site in addition to the Thrivent Builds Homes outdoor sign?
A: Yes. For instance, if you’re working with a local plumbing company or other contractors, their signs may be placed on the build site in addition to the Thrivent Builds Homes outdoor sign.

New Thrivent Builds Volunteer Resources

Affiliate and Chapter Specialist PSR Forms
At the January Thrivent Builds training, we received feedback that LCSS-TBs and ODCs would like to access affiliate and chapter forms for providing data into the Project Status Reports. We developed drafts, sought feedback through the Advisory Team, and now have the forms posted on the Thrivent Builds Homes Resources website. Feel free to use these to aid in gathering information. We also know there are some real go-getters out there who already developed forms, so feel free to use those as well. Here are the links to the forms:

Project Status Report – Affiliate Info (Excel, 36K)
Project Status Report – Chapter Specialist Info (Word, 69K)

As you use forms, develop other tools, and improve the process, please send your improvements to the following locations so they can be cataloged for consideration in the 2007 redesign:

Habitat for Humanity staff: thriventbuilds@habitat.org
Thrivent Financial staff: thriventbuilds@thrivent.com

And remember, while the project status report data is important for reporting purposes, the project status report itself is a project management tool that helps the entire Thrivent Builds Homes Project Team focus on being proactive toward meeting its goals.
